Access to Energy
FDC is working towards the goal of providing access to energy for the poor through a diverse range of activities, partnerships and initiatives.
An estimated 1.6 billion people in developing countries do not have access to electricity. Around 1 billion of these live in the Asia-Pacific region. Many more people are still dependent on biomass and traditional cooking stoves for meeting their cooking and heating needs.
Without access to modern energy, the poorest in the Asia-Pacific region are deprived of opportunities for economic and social development. Environmental degradation is exacerbated as a result. There is growing awareness of the need and potential for cleaner, more renewable energy to provide an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective means of supplying off-grid access to energy for the poor, particularly in developing countries.
FDC is promoting greater access to clean and renewable energy for the poor in response to these issues.
The energy related initiatives FDC is active in and include:
- Facilitating a collective partnership (i.e. the Energy for All Partnership, with the Asian Development Bank) between development organisations, governments, civil society and the private sector to increase access to clean and renewable energy sources for the poor.
- Strategic consulting with donor organisations to assist them in defining their approach to energy-related issues and to develop appropriate operational strategies.
- Promoting best practice methods and raising awareness about cleaner, efficient and renewable energy through micro-finance programs, and by compiling and publicising case studies of relevant energy projects.
- Developing, populating and maintaining a database of stakeholders active in providing technologies, products, financial and technical support, information and advice, to enable communities to scale up access to energy, particularly for the poorest consumers.
