Disaster Risk Management
Through its Disaster Risk Management program, FDC aims to increase the capacity of people in developing countries to cope with disasters. FDC is currently working on raising disaster management awareness and promoting best practice risk reduction strategies.
Natural disasters such as those caused by flood, storm, earthquake, tsunami and fire are harsh facts of life for anybody, but poor people face particular vulnerabilities. Poor households are often more exposed to natural hazards and lack the resources and resilience to deal with them. Strategies that support the reduction of this vulnerability can greatly improve the level of adverse impact felt by these households.best practice risk reduction strategies.
FDC is working to mitigate the effects of natural disasters on the poor through:
- Producing and publishing training materials about microfinance and disaster management. These training materials have been developed to strengthen and build capacity amongst microfinance institutions (MFIs) to cope with natural disasters and to serve their clients in crisis situations, as best as possible.
- Raising awareness and increasing the level and effectiveness of microfinance interventions in post-disaster reconstruction situations through tailored capacity building activities for MFIs, i.e. training, and training of trainers (TOT).
- Providing practical development skills and knowledge to practitioners on how to design and implement programs to reduce risks and vulnerability attributable to disasters and crisis situations through specialised training workshops.
- Engaging in virtual network forums to share FDC's research and information.
- Organising forums and seminars covering topics such as microfinance for disaster management and capacity building for MFIs in crisis situations. These sessions include policies, strategies and actions for MFIs operating in communities impacted by natural disasters, conflict or civil unrest, and HIV/AIDS.
